Olympia Math Teachers Assist Students Raise Faltering Math Grades

By Katie Bergeron, OHS Torch Reporter

Olympia High School has been in session for over a month and some math students are struggling; luckily the math teachers have a solution to this problem - Math Study Hall.
Math Study Hall is available during both advisories in Mrs. Davis, Ms. Biswell, and Mrs. Bowers rooms. Any student who wants to go can. They must have a pass from their advisory teacher. Some math teachers request that specific students attend.

Olympia High School math teacher, Mrs. Davis, said, “Kids who typically come to Math Study Hall are students who missed a day or so, their teachers asks them to go, they are struggling in class, or having trouble comprehending a concept. The number of students who attend depends on the day, we have had a good turn out so far.”

During Math Study Hall, lessons can be retaught, homework questions can be answered, and tests and quizzes can be made up. It is very much based on individual student needs.

Haleigh Ruestman, Olympia High School Sophomore, said, “Math Study Hall helped me bring my grade back up.”

Most of the math teachers at Olympia run a Math Study Hall. Algebra for freshmen is covered by Mrs. Bowers, Geometry for freshmen and sophomores is covered by Ms. Biswell, and CAT, Precalc, and anything else for upperclassmen is covered by Mrs. Davis.

Besides just the math teachers tutoring students, there are also other students at Math Study Hall to help. The tutors have passed the class  and are usually freshmen mentors or NHS members.

Ruestman said, “I recommend if anyone is having troubles in math, whether it be the whole class, the homework, or a lesson, to go to Math Study Hall. It is extremely helpful.”
