OHS Color Guard, Flags Flying and Crowds Cheering

Most people don’t pay much attention to the visual art connected to band; Color guard, which performs with flags while the band performs with instruments during competitions, games, and other performances.


The OHS Color Guard includes eight female students. Since last year, the team downsized a bit. They have a strong leadership and great cooperation of the team according to Hannah Deuel, co-captain of Color Guard.
   
    According to Cassady Kaeb, co-captain, her favorite part of Color Guard is the competitions and watching other bands perform. OHS Color Guard competed at State Saturday, September 17th, at Normal West in Bloomington. They won first place in Auxiliary in the competition.


“Overall performance exceeded our goals,” commented Duel, regarding the competition. Proud members will compete again the following Saturday. In order to prepare for performances and competitions they practice everyday school day during the last hour.


Color Guard competes 4-5 times throughout the season. They perform with the marching band. Members practice their routine until perfection before performing.


Last year’s theme for Color Guard was Circus, where Kaeb did a small circus routine during the performance. The new theme this year is Love Story. Kaeb reported that their routine will include a Romeo and Juliet dances to incorporate the theme.


    “We make music visible. We give you art to look at while listening to music,” boasted Kaeb. Being very visually artistic, Color Guard members apply creative face makeup plentiful of color. Each face design varies and is very visually appealing.

The members of Color Guard include Kiersten Rodman, Cloe Spacklen, Haley Jones, Kenzie Hasty, Kendra Appleton, and Janelle Birky. The captains of the team are Hannah Deuel and Cassady Kaeb.
