Scholarship, Leadership, Character, and Service are the guiding mottos of Olympia High School’s National Honor Society organization which has begun recently with discussions of upcoming events to serve Olympia students.
The National Honor Society consists of around sixty members. This includes twenty-four senior members that will be graduating at the end of the year.
“A student must have a 3.5 GPA and submit an essay which is evaluated by numerous faculty members,” said Amanda Hapgood, English teacher, on the requirements it takes to be a member.
The NHS Advisors for NHS include Mrs. Hapgood and Ms. Lisa Steve, OHS Counselor. There are four senior members who run the NHS events and meetings, the President (Genna Van Wye), Vice President (Bekah Bauersfield), Secretary (Carson Goff), and Treasurer (Ellie Martin).
“Check the website, try something new, and contribute to the community. We try to make sure there are more opportunities for students to get involved,” said Hapgood on tips for the new members.
The National Honor Society’s first event will be a Halloween carnival for the Olympia grade school kids. This will include a canned food drive and a Halloween door competition between advisories.
“The carnival will be really fun for the grade school kids to dress up in costumes and see the decorated doors,” said Ms. Steve on the upcoming Halloween event.
The next NHS meeting is on Thursday, Oct. 1 at 7:50 am in room B5. At the meeting, plans will be made for the Homecoming carnival and the Halloween event.
