Swimming Spartans Finish Strong at the 2016 IHSA Sectionals

By Abigail Jackson, OHS The Torch reporter
The OHS four member Boy’s Swimming and Diving Team faced lots of competition as they finished out their season with sectionals at Normal West High School on Saturday, February 20.
“Against other teams it was really hard, but against us there was no competition,” said OHS senior Chance Cook about the other teams at sectionals.
Junior Hunter Schuerman said, “It was different knowing that with four people we couldn’t win, but I feel like swimming is more of an individual event, and we all did good individually.”
Hunter dropped time in all of his events at sectionals, but sadly didn’t break the minute in the 100 freestyle like he’d hoped. Chance on the other hand seemed to have a difficult time remembering if he had gotten any personal records (PRs) at the sectionals, telling me that he might have dropped time in the 50 free, but was unsure about that.
Despite not breaking the minute in the 100 freestyle, Hunter said he’d met all of his personal goals this season. Chance also met his goal which was to survive the swim season this year.
The boys said that their taper, which is a period where the workout is stair-stepped down during the two weeks before sectionals to give the athlete’s muscles rest before competing on a much larger scale than other meets, wasn’t as extreme as the girl’s taper. The boys went from swimming 4,000 yards a day to swimming 2,000 yards with less intensity, but with lots of sprints.

Hunter said that he felt really good about his personal season because he dropped time in everything and that he’s getting close to state times and that when he gets close to those state times it makes him feel good.
