Art Students Envision New Project Designs

By Adam Gaither, OHS Torch Reporter
On February 12, Sandra Pitcher, Olympia Art Teacher, discussed ongoing plans for her art classes this semester, including current projects, future assignments, and ideas to incorporate student artwork into the rest of the school.
For those that don’t know her, this is Ms. Pitcher’s first year as an Olympia teacher, but before she came to Olympia, she taught art to elementary students.
After teaching for a semester, she is used to Olympia. “Getting to know the staff makes things easier,” said Ms. Pitcher.
This semester she is teaching three art classes: Art 1, Sculpture and Ceramics, and Drawing and Design.
Art 1 and Drawing and Design are both working on master projects. These are four ongoing projects that the students work on throughout the semester. The art students have complete freedom to choose what they do for each project.
Sculpture and Ceramics are currently working on creating an object that solves a problem. The students have the freedom to choose the materials to make their project and must design something to improve how something is done.
Ms. Pitcher expressed an idea for the ceramics class design 3D projects that could be placed around the school’s commons.
Ms. Pitcher also had a favored form of art, mixed media and painting. In this art style, Ms. Pitcher uses paints and collages to design and produce her projects.
