The Olympia high school boys cross country team is working
towards their goal of a fifth consecutive state appearance in early November
and are currently midway through their fall season.
The cross country team runs, runs, runs in preparation for
state, averaging six miles a day and thirty-plus miles in a typical week. One
cross country race is three miles long. Runners typically run a mile to warm up
prior to the race and a mile to cool down after.
Junior, Shelby Siltman, says the strategy going into a race
is, “Run fast and don’t get last.”
The boys and girls team has been looking forward to the El
Paso meet which they consider the most challenging and fun meet of the season.
The course is full of hills and the runners even have to go through a creek.
The El Paso meet is unique because it is themed meaning they
encourage runners to come dressed up in costumes. This year’s theme is Jurassic
Park and after the races there is a competition between the teams over who has
the best costumes and decorations. To make a more upbeat atmosphere a dance
party is included after all the other events.
Running on the varsity cross country team for the girls is
pack leader Shelby Siltman, Morgan Aldridge, Hannah Lawless, Mary Grace
Cleinmark, and Payton Wille. Leading the boys is Kyle Rader along with Cody
Cheeseman, Liam O’Rourke, Chance Cook, and Dallas Spencer.
According to junior, Zach Kingston, “The girl’s team has been
placing higher in meets this year than last and the boy’s team has been doing
okay too.”
Zach was referring to the El Paso meet which was a good meet
for the girls with the team placing fourth overall and Shelby Siltman winning
the race. The team was proud of the fourth place finish on such a challenging
course.
